Shofars, Pomegranates & a Sweet New Year!

With Rosh Hashanah just around the corner, we had a very special question to answer: What is Rosh Hashanah?

Hashem created the world in six days, and on the sixth day He created the very first man and woman, Adam and Chava. That special day was Rosh Hashanah! We learned that Rosh Hashanah is the birthday of the world, a time to celebrate Hashem as our King and begin a sweet new year!

On Rosh Hashanah, we listen to the shofar! The sound of the shofar is like a baby crying. When a baby cries, their mommy or daddy comes running to help them! When we sound the shofar, Hashem, our Father in Heaven, hears our cry and comes close to us. We ask Hashem to help us and bless us with a happy, healthy, and sweet new year.

Ashira and Yehudis, showed us how we take care of babies with lots of love and care!

We learned that a shofar comes from the horn of a special kosher animal! 🐏 We looked closely at different shofars, their shapes, sizes, and curves, and tried to match each one to the animal it came from.

Ziva, matched the small shofar to the goat, while Ashira matched the long swirly shofar to the antelope. Ariella discovered that the long, slim shofar comes from a kudu, and Tal matched the shofar we usually use on Rosh Hashanah to the ram!

Wow! Shofars can look so different, but they all have a very special job on Rosh Hashanah!

Yosef, practiced taking a big breath and blowing into his shofar!💨

We went fishing! 🎣🐟
We learned about a special Rosh Hashanah minhag (custom), eating the head of a fish while asking Hashem that we should be like the head and not the tail, growing to be strong Jewish leaders who make good choices and do lots of mitzvos!

Ariella, caught a BIG yellow fish! What a catch!

We learned that a pomegranate have 613 seeds just like the 613 mitzvos in our Torah! When we eat a pomegranate on Rosh Hashanah, we remind Hashem of all the sweet mitzvos we do and ask for a year filled with even more mitzvos! Ella, tried counting all the way to 613 ❤️

Pomegranate-themed playdough! Ashira, got creative and made a beautiful crown for her pomegranate using the big beads.

Ella and Ziva, hid some special surprises inside their playdough pomegranates!

Baking honey cake together was definitely one of the highlights of our week! Zalman and Ziva used their big muscles to squeeze the sticky honey into our bowl such strong muscles!

Yosef, made sure not a single drop of sweet honey was left behind in the measuring cup!

We added a fall spice mix to our honey cake and used our noses to explore the delicious smells! Toby said, "It smells like cinnamon!" Yehudis, thought it smelled delicious! 😋

Water play on a HOT day!
