"The Rainbow Fish", sharing OUR SCALES!

A unit on Literacy and empowering beautiful values for our class.

"The Rainbow Fish" by; Marcus Pfister

A best seller and a very popular book about a fish who had many shiny scales. At first he did not want to share and he became a very lonely fish. After accepting advice from an octopus, to give each of his friends one of his shiny scales-  he became the happiest fish and his friends felt the same way.

The 'Gan touch'- Empowering our children to share THEIR SCALES!

Each person has their own unique 'special scales' that Hashem has given them. Talents, knowledge, interests etc. By sharing these 'scales' with others we become happier, more fulfilled people and our friends gain so much.
It was such a privilege to watch the children discover their scales and build their confidence to share with others! It was a great learning experience.

Documenting the process

Each time we 'caught' a 'scale moment' when a child shared their knowledge/talent with others we visually documented it by placing it on our big rainbow fish bulletin board. This was a great way for the children to revisit it and contemplate how good it felt to teach their friends and how special they are!

Scale moments

Muka was creating scale marks on her play dough fish by using the back of a pen. Instead of just focusing on her achievements and ask her thought provoking questions like, "How did you come to that creative idea?" We encouraged her to teach her friends her new technique.

Dovi was so happy after being shown by Muka how to use the back of a pen to make scale marks! Muka felt so important and special and Dovi was excited to try it out!

A double scale moment

Devorah Leah shared with us that her sister Bracha Leba shared a 'scale' with her! At home her sister showed her a drawing of a mitzvah of dressing modestly. Devorah leah then told us she wanted to draw here in class to share it with her friends!

Elizabeth shared with us how she can show her friends how to paint scales on a fish.

she was very excited to be wearing a fish dress that day!
On the basic level, Scale moments can also be simply sharing physical items with each other! It is such a good feeling to fulfill someone elses need.

Aron noticed Dovi really wanted the big torah by circle time so he swapped torahs with him!

Levi had a very complicated move he wanted to teach everyone! We learned about flexibility!

Muka discovered there was a magnet on the leg of the table. She shared her knowledge with others!

Such sweet sharing moments!

Fish scale art

Celery sticks and paint created a fish scale image. We placed a rainbow fish picture to get inspiration.

Fishing for colors!

With all the Rainbow fish talk, we took this opportunity to practice our colors. On our 'ocean' it took a lot of concentration to pick up a certain color fish using a magnetic fishing rod.

Fun in the sun

There are no fitting words for the love we share with each other!
