Parshat Terumah: Traveling the Map

This week’s Parsha is all about the Mishkan (tabernacle) and its Keilim (vessels). Hashem told the Jewish people to build a Mishkan as Hashem’s home. The Yidden traveled with the Mishkan while they were in the Midbar (desert) for 40 years. The Mishkan was like a tent! When the Yidden were ready to travel they packed up the Mishkan and carried it with them. When it was time to stop the Yidden unpacked the Mishkan. This week we took out a tent and build it with Morah Keren. We all had a lot of fun!

The name of this weeks Parsha is Terumah which means donation. Hashem told Moshe to tell the Yidden to donate gold, silver, copper, fabric, animal skins, wood, oil, spices and precious stones. These were all needed for parts of the Mishkan.
In class we spoke about what a donation means and how they help the community.

The Menorah had seven branches which were all made from one piece of gold! Dovi and Mendel are trying to build a Menorah from one piece of dough.

The Aron was made from three boxes, one inside the other!  The inner and outer boxes made from gold, the middle one made from wood, with golden keruvim (angels) on top.
The Luchos (Ten commandments) were placed inside.

We learned that when the Yiddin were following in the way of Hashem the Keruvim were facing each other, but when the Yiddin were not following in the way of Hashem the Kruvim were facing their backs to each other. Just like Menachem and Faiga are demonstrating for us.

Hashem said that when the Yidden will build a Mishkan, it will be a dwelling place (a home) for Hashem. In class we learned that each one of us can be a Mikdash. When we make our house holy and when we use our body to do Mitzvos we are making Hashem feel comfortable inside of us.

The World Map

We learned this week that the world is made up of big pieces of land.
These are called Continents.
Countries are smaller and are inside continents.
Our country is inside the Continent of North America.
We played a spin-off game of "pin the tail"
Everyone chose a color continent and needed to fly their plane to it blindfolded!
Saige landed right on her continent of Asia!

We sang a fun song to learn the names of the continents:
Asia, Africa, North and South America, Antarctica, Europe and finally Australia!
(ask your child to sing it to you!)

We had a fun time singing the song and pointing to each continent.
Did you know the continents aren't really those colors.
Mapmakers (or cartographers) make them different colors so we can tell the difference.
Really the continents are all shades of brown and green because of what grows on them.

Last week was so rainy!
We made some soup to warm us up right in time for shabbos!
Enjoying the vegetable soup of our labor!
With matzah balls as a special treat!

We saw a rainbow!!
Rainbows are so beautiful, and they are Hashem's reminder
that we need to do more mitzvos to make the world more beautiful!
