This week's Torah portion is the first in the book of "Shemos." It describes the beginning of the story of the Jewish slavery in Mitzrayim -Egypt. The Jews were forced to build, creating their own cement to build with bricks. We learned that the Egyptians were so mean, in that they would destroy the work that the Jewish people did, and tell them it wasn't good enough and make them do it again!
To help the children understand this, we created a center with kinetic sand for the children to build bricks with. The bricks would break apart very quickly after working so hard to build them! This helped the children imagine the work that the Jewish people were forced to do, again and again.
Using our little people puppets and felt props the children watched Morah Avigayil tell the story of Moshe (Moses) being born, and being hidden in a basket in the Nile River.
Rozie pretended to be "Princess Batya" whose hand miraculously stretched out really far to find baby Moshe and bring him to the palace!
The story continues with Hashem revealing Himself to Moshe in a burning Bush. Dovi is creating a demonstration of a burning bush! Hashem asked Moshe to take the Jewish people out of slavery in Mitzrayim.
Science- Winter Weather!
So many miracles in the way Hashem creates the weather! We tried to create our own snowmen using different ingredients! The children placed Baking soda inside tissue paper, wrapped it up and placed in a ziploc bag. The next step was to pour vinegar inside the bag and then seal the zip!
It was exciting and fun to see what happened to each of our friends snowmen! Some of them blew up really quickly, some of them even exploded! We discussed the gas reaction in the bag that the vinegar brought onto the baking soda!
Snowflake Art
Using little square pieces of paper and glue, the children created their own snowflake art! Did you know that just like every person has its own unique look, every single flake of snow looks different! Another miracle in Hashem's creations!Another way to create snowflake art was using glue to create a shape of a snowflake. After that the children sprinkled salt on it, and then water color to color the salt! The art was magnificent!
Another snow science experiment...We poured a mixture of salt and hot water together onto a cut out of snowflake! We left the product overnight and saw how the mixture crystalized into an icy crystal looking design!
Can you lift an ice cube with a string?
Using a table full of ice we invited each child to try picking up an icecube using a string! Most of our friends did not think it would be possible!Morah Avigayil demonstrated an idea using salt!
We wet the string, placed it on the ice, and then sprinkled some salt onto the ice. The salt made the temperature change on the ice, which adhered the string to the ice cube. Magically when the children lifted the string, the icecube came a long with it! It was a lot of fun swinging the ice cube that was stuck to the string! We try to encourage the children to experiment different ways to make things happen that don't seem possible! (With the Morah's or their parents guidance and supervision)
Happy Birthday Batya!
We enjoyed such a wonderful celebration with both classes! Thank you Batya and her parents for gifting our class with some new baby dolls to play with! We are so excited to share them and enhance our dramatic play center!
