Parshat Vayeira: Be Our Guest

Parshat Vayeira: Be Our Guest

Yisroel is using special dishes to set up the table.
When you are a host you use special dishes to show your guest how important they are.

Evan practices setting a formal table

Capit Hebrew

We had so much fun learning the rainbow sound. All the children got a turn to use the rainbow chalk rake to make the shape of the ''R'' sound that looks like a rainbow and say the ''R'' sound at the same time.

Motty is blending the top and the bottom sound. First read the top sound, then read the bottom sound.
We learned that the ה sound at the end of a word is very tired and can't speak anymore, so it is sleeping.

Aleph Bais Fun

TK learned this week that גזר (gezer) starts with a ג (Gimmel)!
Faiga takes a turn squeezing hummus on a baby carrot and sticking it to the tray to make a giant Gimmel.
Mendel plays a Gezer matching game, and digs up an aleph- beis match.

Menachem uses the stem of a Gezer to paint his Gimmel.
We are making an Aleph Bais book in our class!!

C is for Corn

In Tk we like to explore the letters of the Alphabet through a concrete medium. This week we learned and explored with corn! Corn starts with the letter C.
Faiga shakes corn kernels and paint together creating a shake-painted "C"

Tk watched and worked together to pop the pop-corn kernels. Everyone took turns and waited patiently for the Popcorn Party to begin!

Evan presses the pattern of a corncob into his yellow playdough

Tk made a graph of our favorite ways to eat corn. We each got to place two stickers on the chart, representing our two favorite ways to eat corn. Mendel was excited to show that he liked popcorn the best.

Will you be our guest?

The first Jewish couple, our forefather and foremother, Avraham and Sara are in this week's Torah portion.
They lived in a four door tent and taught people about Hashem. They loved having guests, and there were three miracles that took place in their home.

Using a tent with four openings, we brought the story to life in our classroom this week.

 The Three Miracles

 1) Cloud over their tent
This was a constant reminder that Hashem's presence was there. We headed outdoors to look and discuss wha the clouds are.

Creating a cloud scene using glue, shaving cream and cotton balls. Chanie enjoyed the sensory experience.

 2) Sara's miraculous Shabbos Candles
Every Friday night Sara would light Shabbos candles that lasted all week! Right before the next Friday night it would go out for her to light it again.
What an empowering feeling knowing for thousands of years a chain of Jewish women have been lighting candles just like Sara, our mother!

We placed pictures of some of our friends lighting the Shabbos candles by Shabbos party on Friday to add to their role playing.

Sholom painting on tin foil while looking at pictures of silver candles sticks and flames.

'Hidden candle art'
As our friends painted with water colors on their paper, a waxed image of the Shabbos candles appeared.

 3) Sara's miraculous Challah

Sara's Challah that she made was famous for being very satiating. Whoever ate her challah was full for a very long time.

Busy in the tent making challah.

Moshe ran to get the washing cup to wash before eating his challah. Just like Avraham he would help his guest wash themselves and say the blessing.

Yanky was so excited to share with us he had challah in his lunchbox.

Batya placing sesame seeds on her challah project.

Mendel brought a puppet from home and it was perfect to play the guest role in our puppet show.
He decided his name was David and he was really hungry for Sara's delicious food.

Hosting Etiquette

Avraham and Sara loved having guests.
We learned many lessons on how to be gracious hosts this week.
We made cookies and invited the kindergarten class to be our guests.

Esther eagerly ran to open the door for our guests.

We were so proud of all the children for not tasting a single bit before giving one to our guest.
Arik chose his older brother.

Batya gave Saige a cookie and remembered to say "your welcome" after hearing Saige say "thank you".

Enjoying their own cookie after their guests were served.

Parshat Lech Lecha: Like the Stars in the Sky

Parshas Lech Lecha

The Parsha begins with Hashem telling Avraham to leave his home in Charan and to travel to Canaan, Eretz Yisroel.
When Avraham arrives in Eretz Yisroel he finds out that there is a famine. There was no food. But there was food in Mitzraim. Avraham and his family traveled to Mitzrayim to get food. Avraham was worried the people living in Mitzrain would take Sara away from him because she was so beautiful. So Avraham decided to hide Sara in one of the boxes.
Bela Riva is hiding in a suitcase just like Sara hid in a box.

Ask your child what happened next to Sara!

Hashem promised Avraham that he would have children and that they will be as many as the stars in the sky.  Hashem told Avraham that He is giving him the Land of Canaan (Israel) , and it will be for his children and grandchildren forever!
Rozei is counting all the stars from our friends projects. It was not easy to count all the stars.
Each and every one of us is a star. When we say something nice to our friends we shine brightly.

 Morning Parsha Centers

I wonder what Avraham packed with him when he traveled to Eretz Yisroel?
What would you pack in your suitcase when you travel?
Motty and Dovi are picking all the items they need to put in their Lech Lecha suitcase.
Hashem promised Avraham Avinu that he would have so many children, as many as the stars in the sky.
Malka and Mendel are creating skies full of stars.

Spelling words from this weeks Parsha in wet sand!
Dovi wrote the word ארץ that means Land because Hashem promised Eretz Yisroel to Avraham.

Words are Powerful

Mitzvah Menchies are experimenting with plants and words. We have 2 plants in our experiment.
To one plant we will show love and affection, saying nice things and using a gentle voice.
The second plant, we will do the opposite, using an angry voice and not-nice words.
Plants are living things, so we wonder what will happen.
What do you think mommies and daddies?
Saige promises to be best friends with the good plant.

Capit Hebrew Reading

The Capit program was a lot of fun. We practiced the sound "B" by playing a game. The goal was to get the Ball in the Box. The children were able to visualize the spelling and create a wonderful memory by having fun playing a game.
Here we are practicing the sound ''V'' as in Van. We had a lot of fun pretending we were in a Van.
Bela Riva is shouting ''EE, EE, EE'' because we learned the new sound  ''EE''

This week we actually started to read real words. Our first word in Hebrew was אבא and most of us knew the meaning!  אבא means Dad.

English IPad Program

One of the most exciting moments this week was starting our Capit English program. The children get to learn and practice english language sounds for 20 minutes a day.

Malka and Bela Riva finished their work so quickly and they wanted more! So together they decided testing each other on all the sounds they learned.

Aleph Bais Exploration

After a scavenger hunt around the room to collect the letters Beis and Veis, we worked together to form giant versions of the letters.
Evan chooses "light up" beads to glue on his Beis, because he likes that kind the most.

 "B" is for Bird

After learning that "B" is the first letter of bird, we went on a leaf-gathering mission so we could make birds nests.
Our explorers chose and considered each leaf and branch carefully before adding it the basket.

Faiga proudly displays all of our findings!

Menachem uses glue to stick his branches and leaves on his "B" to make a birds nest.

Exploring and learning about a birds favorite food.... Worms!!
Mendel couldn't wait for his turn to observe and play.
